A look back at the 2nd CSGSCS Colloquium

Today, the Cinema Studies Graduate Student Colloquium Series held its second Workshop, where PhD students presented their papers in preparation for the Society for Cinema & Media Studies’ Annual Conference, which will take place in Seattle next week (March 19-23.)

In the presence of peers from the graduate program, as well as faculty members, PhD candidates Zach Melzer and Kaia Scott presented two very interesting papers. Zach’s presented his paper “Outdoor Digital Advertising and the Aesthetics of Transience” in which he introduced us to his concept of transience and its relation to the economy of distraction that is at play in digital billboards, such as those found in Time Square.  Afterwards, Kaia worked through some of the ideas she will be presenting at SCMS under the title “Moving Pictures to Soothe the Man of Battle: Film Technologies as Therapy in the Second World War. In her talk, Kaia discussed the different uses of motion pictures as a psychiatric aid in the context of WWII training, therapy and rehabilitation. Both presentations were extremely good and only suffered from the time limits that are imposed on all talks; in other words, the ever present problem of having too much to say.

If you couldn’t attend the workshop, here are a few photos to give you an idea of what happened:
