The “Oksana and John Locke Award: The First 100 Years of Cinema” will be disbursed at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year. Over a period of years, Oksana Dykyj and John Locke have made contributions to create an endowment which funds this annual $2500 award.
The primary criterion for the Award is evidence that the student has a particular interest in an aspect of film history dating from the period between 1895 and 1995, and has been doing outstanding work in pursuing this interest. This interest must go beyond doing required work for film courses. In order to be eligible for the graduate student award, students must, at the time of the application, be pursuing a Master of Arts (Film Studies), a Master of Fine Arts (Cinematic Arts, formerly), or a Ph.D. (Film and Moving Image Studies). Eligible student applicants shall include Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students. Student applicants must be enrolled in one of the programs mentioned above in the academic year of their application and be in good standing.
All applicants for the Award must submit the following to the Chair of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema no later than March 15, 2019:
- A letter describing the applicant’s personal and professional interest in a particular aspect of the first one hundred years of cinema (1895-1995). This letter will include a statement outlining plans for developing their interests, research and studies, as the case may be, in this specific period of film history during the two (2) years following their application. This letter should be no more than 500 words.
- Two examples of written work or audio-video practice documenting this interest which may be an article submitted for a course, a publication, a thesis chapter or proposal, a conference presentation, a review, a curated film program, a video, a film, or a journal. Work done as part of an Independent Study or for non-course-based purposes may also be considered. The work submitted must have been completed within the last two calendar years.
Selection of the student recipient of the Award shall be based on a combination of originality, research and writing/presentation.

Audio-visual work should be submitted either through a link to the work online or on a USB key (clearly labeled) submitted to the Cinema Office, FB 319.
