Submission Deadline: November 15th, 2014
“This special issue of Media-N: Journal of the New Media Caucus will explore the various permutations of the term “research-creation” in relation to the work and community linked to the Hexagram Network for Research-Creation in Media Arts, Design and Digital Culture. The main question for this thematic issue, “What is research-creation?” is not intended to produce a definitive statement. It is meant to instigate a proliferation of responses stemming from the breadth of experience and practices represented by Hexagram-affiliated writers, artists, thinkers, makers and pedagogues.
We seek short position papers (2000-3000 words) that explore the theoretical, methodological, social, material and historical considerations linked to research-creation. While referencing one’s own work is welcome, the papers are intended to go beyond descriptions of the research-creation activities of the selected authors, focusing instead on broader considerations and contexts. What is at stake with research-creation, from your point of view? What forms of scholarship does the term enable? What are the linked concerns and considerations that accompany the integration of material, artistic and aesthetic practices into academic systems of valuation and the metrics of research “productivity”? What methods and new forms of dissemination does it enable? “Research-creation” is a term Hexagram members have been asked to identify with, but what do we think about it? We are interested in pieces (even provocations) that map out current considerations while gesturing towards past and future horizons.
Media-N’s special edition has been conceived in conjunction with the Media Art Histories conference organized at Hexagram in Montreal, and it will be linked to related panels and themes explored therein. The issue will be launched during the conference to be held Nov 5-8th, 2015.
Proposals may be submitted in French or English and can be also from the supervised students of members of Hexagram. The selection process for papers, with dates given, above will be by peer-review.
