Screenings at the Cinémathèque québécoise

As part of the MA seminar on “Sexual Revolution in Quebec Cinema”, several screenings of rare prints of 1970s Quebec films will be shown at the Cinémathèque québécoise. There will be four screenings throughout the semester on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. See the schedule and description of the screenings below:

Special screenings of 7 rare archival prints of 1970s Quebec films.

Salle Claude Jutra, Cinémathèque québécoise, 335 est, boul. de Maisonneuve (Métro Berri-UQAM, St-Denis exit). 

All screenings at 1pm.

Five are rare English-subtitled or English-versioned prints, none available on DVD. Offered in context of Concordia Cinema MA seminar on “Sexual Revolution in Quebec Cinema.”

 Wednesday September 17:

a) Les Chats bottés, Claude Fournier 1971, 90 min. English-dubbed version (35mm).

Maple syrup softcore porn comedy about panic masculinity.

b) L’Ange et la femme, Gilles Carle, 1977, 86 min.  Eng. s-t. (35mm)

The canonical director’s allegorical art film about death and the maiden, starring his muse Carole Laure.

Wednesday October 1:

La vie rêvée (Dream Life), Mireille Dansereau, 1972, 90 min., Eng. s-t. (35mm).The director will be present as our special guest.

The first independent Quebec feature by a female director, a female friendship romance.

Wednesday October 8:

a) Plusieurs tombent en amour, Guy Simoneau, 1980, 107 min.   Eng. s-t. (16mm)

Pioneering feature documentary on the Main, offering testimony by sexworkers of three genders, as well as pimps, madams, and clients.

b) Toni, Randi and Marie, Ron Hallis, 1971, 48 min. Orig. French version (35mm).

Unique and prophetic, intimate portraits of three sex and gender rebels.

Wednesday November 5:

La cuisine rouge, Paule Baillargeon & Frédérique Collin, 1980, 82 min. Original French version.

Building on feminist experimental theatre of the 1970s, an excoriating critique of the gender divide.
